Chaos in the font menu

There comes a point at which another extended, expert, [explative] font in a family doesn't help any more. WIth simple interpolation, and the even more dangerous superpolation, font families are getting out of control. But it's so fun to make more weights!

These are a few of the test weights I've cut for a family I'm now calling Hamblin (working title). I'm not sure where to stop with the interpolations, though. On the one hand, I appreciate having options when I'm setting type. On the other hand, 20 fonts in my font menu become overwhelming. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I'm attaching a test chop of the bold (bad spacing, and I haven't measured all the stems yet, so the hinting will be wacky). Again, this font is a beta, and I'll probably take it down before long, but I'd be interested in hearing what anyone has to say about it. Feel free to use it on whatever you want, just don't redestribute it.

Great work, really: for a beta font, it is already very robust. I don't think you've gone too far with the different weights, I love to have many weights in a family, only to choose 2 or 3 for a design, and still have options left for extra formatting.

Did you planned to superpolate the slab serif too?

Christian,

What's your timetable for completing this? I'm looking for a sans-serif for an upcoming magazine redesign, and like the looks of Hamblin. Any chance you'll have a basic collection of weights (preferably with itals) ready by July?

Marc

I might be able to work something out. The only thing I really need at this point is motivation to finish :-)

Well, I'll keep Hamblin half in mind as I weigh typographic options, then. ;)

It's likely that the display serif will drive the project. Right now I'm vacillating between something like Farnham, whose funk and grit would make it a good match with gothic like Hamblin, or the sleeker, near-hairline thins of Freight Big, which would probably be happier with a more refined sans.

Very nice articles thank you...
